| The Gamsbart is a hat accessory that is part of the Bavarian and Austrian Tracht. Gamsbärte are made from the from hair from the chamois' lower neck. But these are very expensive. Gambarts made from badgers', deers' or wild sows' hair are cheaper but just as common. The lower end end of the tuft is enclosed in an ornamented setting of metal which allows the upper end to spread in a brush-like fashion. The color of the hair is dark with a light tip. The size of a Gamsbart is very important and depends on the men's pride and manliness since Gamsbärte are exclusively for men's hats. Popular ornaments for the metal settings are Edelweiss, animals' heads or other Christian symbols like the cross. |
